Jeff Fortin left and Brad Murphy lift the Boat fishermen in Buzzards Bay have been pulling the occasional to pound fish out of large schools of 24 to 36 inch bass. He asked Fortin if he should follow the fish, but Fortin declined, not fully knowing the size of the fish he was attached to. Fortin was fighting the fish on a size Shimano Saragosa spooled with pound test braided line attached to a pound-test leader with a uni-to-uni knot. With the real possibility of being spooled or having the fish break the leader, Gould maneuvered the boat as it ran underneath another boat.
The Cape Cod Canal. I spent Wednesday and Thursday morning getting frustrated at the Canal, with plenty of fish showing but not much taking. Apparently, according to Bruce Miller at Canal Bait & Tackle, the bass are on very small bait, including silversides, small squid, and even some small 1 to 3″ pogies.
He asked me what I was using for bait and I replied that worms seemed to be working. The pier is like many in bays, small and close to the water and sits over fairly shallow bay water with a mud and eelgrass bottom. The pier is near to and almost directly fronts the channel entering the harbor and sits just down and across the harbor from the live bait receiver which typically attract fish.
Bait barge It also only pokes out fifty or so feet into the water so anglers are permitted three main areas to fish. The first is the narrow waterway between the shoreline and pier. The second is to cast parallel to the shoreline in either direction away from the pier. The third is to toss a bait straight out into the bay. Each area can present somewhat of a different environment and different species.
The result is a mix of fish common to muddy bottom bays and rocky shorelines combined with more pelagic, top-water species that have taken a wrong turn into the harbor channel. Upshore As to species, Fish and Wildlife surveys list jacksmelt and topsmelt as the numeric leaders at the pier although they are only second in my records.
Kelp calico bass lead the hit parade but sand bass and spotted bay bass will also show up. Generally most of the spotted bay bass show up at night Laid back fishing Croakers and perch would tie for third if there were a ranking. Another croaker occasionally taken is small white sea bass usually called a seatrout. Luckily black seaperch, white seaperch, rubberlip seaperch, and barred surfperch are also available—and some are fairly good size.

There are no truths when it comes to figuring out false albacore. More than any other gamefish in the Northeast, albies display a cohesive attitude when they school up and feed. Occasionally, the stars align and albies let their collective guard down, striking a range of lures with abandon, and every fisherman in on the action will have multiple hookups.
Usually, they live up to their reputation as picky, keen-eyed lure snobs, boiling on bait but ignoring artificials. At these times, there might be only one tactic, lure or style of presentation that is the key to unlocking their jaws. In a fleet of boats chasing albies, the few anglers who have figured them out will far outfish the rest. However, false albacore will always keep anglers humble. Just when you think you have the formula locked down, the attitude of every albie in the area will inexplicably make a degree turn.
If there is a secret to consistent albie success, it is to embrace their always-changing, two-sided nature. There are no absolutes when it comes to false albacore. From shore, casting distance is almost always necessary to reach fish.

I do this to show you folks that there are huge variances in the size and velocity of tides we experience in any given month. In addition to that, at least a couple times in a season we have unusual and extremes of these variances. One can always see these variances by obtaining a tide chart that shows both the times of the high and low tides as well as the height in feet and tenths of both high and low tides.
Last year we experienced for the first time, shoaling on the Chatham outer bar, which restricted the deeper draft vessels from coming and going at any time of day. On the days of an extreme tide, the amount of water under your vessel can be much less than anticipated, so its a good idea to know how to figure the tide, by looking at a tide chart as I mention above. My vessel was only able to transit the bar at one hour before low and two hours after low tide.
Generally speaking Striped Bass like a good tide flow larger with more velocity and Bluefin tuna prefer less flow or current. In the following list I will only list tides smaller than 9 feet or larger than Tides in between these ranges are sometimes larger and sometimes smaller, but for the most part are just average and there is no need to list them all.
Lets remember fish feed when they have the opportunity, generally every day, and not just on the tides that have a larger or smaller than average height.

In the Chatham, Mass. That soon becomes evident to the tourists crowding an observation deck to watch fishermen unload their boats in this picturesque harbor sheltered from the ocean by sandy dunes. The skate wings, white triangular pieces of flesh trailed by streams of blood, slide down ramps onto the loading dock. The next boat brings in dogfish, which looks like a mix between a shark and a lizard, and is no more appealing to the tourists.
For generations, the fish sliding down this ramp would have been cod, a ground fish that has been caught in these parts since the Pilgrims landed on Cape Cod, and before. But for reasons that scientists are still trying to determine, the cod population, shrinking for decades, dropped off precipitously in the last few years. Last year, commercial fishermen caught just 2 million pounds of cod in the Gulf of Maine, which stretches from Nova Scotia to Cape Cod, down from Two decades ago, fishermen hauled in Some fishing regulations have been put in place over the decades to prevent overfishing, but recently, fishermen couldn’t even reach the annual limit of 14 million pounds.
This month scientists with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration wrote that their new analysis “presents a grim picture for the potential recovery of the iconic fish stock.
These shiny chunks of chrome-plated metal have been around for decades, yet still catch fish all kinds. I have taken almost every imaginable Northeast inshore species on diamond jigs, including sea bass, fluke, striped bass, false albacore, bonito, bluefish, scup, cod, and even tautog. When the surface action dies, I often send down a diamond and see what I can dredge up. More often than not, I manage to score something.
One summer I found myself trapped in a fog bank off Cuttyhunk Island, Massachusetts. Fortunately, the seas were calm and I was content to sit tight until the fog lifted.
It is not unusual to hookup a 30 pound bull, so hang on. Another solid winter fishing option is flounder. They school this time of year and will hang around structure both inshore and offshore.
RSS pound bluefin tuna caught on spinning rod A pound tuna also is landed off the Cape Cod area; captains Dom Petrarca and Bobby Rice say these are the largest bluefin ever caught on the lighter tackle October 16, By Pete Thomas pound bluefin tuna is shown with the spinning gear it was caught on; photo courtesy of Coastal Fishing Charters Massachusetts Capt. Dom Petrarca appears to have made history recently when his charter group teamed to land a pound bluefin tuna … on spinning gear.
The catch occurred two days after Bobby Rice, another Cape Cod charter captain, logged the catch of a pound bluefin … also on spinning gear. Petrarca and Rice say these are the largest bluefin tuna ever landed on spinning gear, and so far they’ve received no argument. Such tackle generally includes a large conventional reel, whose spool allows line to strip freely in a straight line toward the water, rather than perpendicularly from a spinning reel. Heavy tackle also includes a stout rod and a harness.

Bluefin Tuna Thunnis thynnus An apex predator of the North Atlantic, Bluefin Tuna grow to over ten feet in length and can weigh up to 1, pounds. Tuna are the ultimate angling challenge; streamlined and powerful, they swim at speeds over 40 miles per hour. Blistering runs and prolonged bulldogging sessions are typical of a battle with a Bluefin Tuna. This biological advantage has allowed the species to forage farther into the cold, nutrient rich waters of the North Atlantic.
When these cold waters upwell and come in contact with sunlight off the New England coastline it results in huge plankton blooms. The plankton in turn support an incredible biomass of bait fish that have allowed the Bluefin to become one of the largest predators on the planet. Check out our Bluefin Tuna Trips and Rates.
Bluefin Tuna arrive in Cape Cod waters early in June after a long migration from their winter breeding grounds in the Gulf of Mexico and the Mediterranean Sea. They do so voraciously, feeding on schools of bait from the surface all the way to the ocean floor. In the late fall, after fattening up for months, they depart our waters to head south again. Bluefin Tuna can be found in most of the waters surrounding the Cape at different times of the year. The Dragonfly is trailer-launched daily.

A number of private two-family houses were also built in this neighborhood, which was named Lindenwood.
